Suchona Theatre Debuts in the United States with Mamunur Rashid’s Amanush

Special Correspondent: A new Bangla theater group, Suchona Theatre, begins its journey in the United States to strengthen Bengali theatrical practice in the diaspora. Established with the vision of introducing Bangladesh’s rich theatrical heritage, storytelling, and cultural
traditions to both the Bangladeshi community and multicultural audiences, the group’s inaugural production is Amanush, a play written by renowned Bangladeshi playwright and theater personality Mamunur Rashid.

The play is being staged on Sunday, June 14, at 9 Bayard Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey, as part of the 21st Anniversary Celebration of the South Asian Theatre Festival. Two performances are scheduled at 3:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., drawing significant interest from theater enthusiasts and members of the Bangladeshi community.

Amanush explores profound questions of humanity, social inequality, moral conflict, and the realities of contemporary society. At its core, the play asks a compelling question: When does a human being become “inhuman”? Through its thought-provoking narrative, the production invites audiences to reflect on their own values and the social conditions that shape human behavior.

The production also marks the directorial debut of Jannatul Tumpa. Speaking about her experience, she says that, as a first-time director, she finds the confidence to undertake such a powerful production through the encouragement and inspiration of Mamunur Rashid. She describes the opportunity to direct one of his plays as one of the greatest honors and
privileges of her life.

Tumpa says the mission of Suchona Theatre extends far beyond staging productions. The organization aims to establish a sustainable platform for Bangla theater in the United States, where Bangladeshi literature, history, heritage, and stories of humanity continue to reach audiences through regular theatrical performances.

She also expresses her heartfelt gratitude to all the actors, crew members, volunteers, supporters, and audience members who contribute to the production. According to her, the love, encouragement, and support of the community remain the greatest source of strength for the newly formed theater group.

Representatives of Suchona Theatre say the organization believes theater is much more than entertainment. It is a powerful expression of culture, identity, dialogue, and human connection. Guided by this vision, the group is committed to expanding and sustaining Bangla theater in the United States while strengthening cultural ties for future generations.

As Bangla language and cultural activities continue to flourish across the diaspora, theater is becoming an increasingly important bridge between generations. Organizers believe Suchona Theatre represents a meaningful new chapter in that journey and hope its future productions will nurture emerging artists, inspire young performers, and further expand the presence of Bangla theater throughout the United States.
