Residents, community leaders, and volunteers gathered at Bay Park in Parkchester on Sunday, August 2, to launch the Parkchester Green Neighbours Initiative, a yearlong environmental program designed to help immigrant families improve their neighbourhoods, reduce energy costs andpromote sustainable living through education and community action.
The initiative, led by Epon Chowdhury, will serve residents of the Parkchester apartment complex by combining environmental education with hands-on volunteer activities. Organisers said the project aims to make sustainability practical and accessible while encouraging stronger community connections and civic engagement.
The project will begin with a community outreach and awareness campaign that includes multilingual flyers, social media outreach, and neighbourhood meetings to introduce residents to the initiative and encourage participation. Volunteers will also conduct an environmental assessment to identify areas that need improvement, including waste management challenges, potential tree-planting sites, and opportunities to expand green spaces.
Throughout the year, residents will participate in regular neighbourhood clean-up and beautification events, removing litter from public spaces while planting native trees and flowers to improve the local environment. Community workshops will provide practical information on recycling, composting, reducing household energy use, and adopting environmentally friendly habits.
The project will also establish a network of trained volunteer Green Neighbours, who will support local families, promote sustainable practices, and provide follow-up assistance within the community.
Educational materials will be developed in multiple languages to ensure information is accessible to Parkchester’s diverse immigrant population.
As the seasons change, volunteers will prepare community gardens for winter by installing protective covers, maintaining garden plots, and planting seasonal greenery. The initiative also plans to expand neighbourhood sustainability efforts by introducing compost stations,
encouraging rainwater harvesting where feasible, and creating pollinator-friendly gardens that support local biodiversity.
Toward the end of the project, organisers will host a Community Green Fair, where residents can learn about environmental practices, celebrate project achievements, and share success stories. The event will highlight the contributions of volunteers and community partners while encouraging more residents to adopt sustainable lifestyles.
The project lead, Epon Chowdhury, said, “Our goal is to make sustainability something every family can be part of,” “Simple changes, like recycling properly or planting a tree, can create a healthier environment. When neighbours work together, they build a stronger
community.” Chowdhury added.
Community leaders who attended the launch welcomed the initiative, saying it is a positive step toward creating a cleaner, greener, and more connected Parkchester. They noted that the project goes beyond environmental improvements by bringing neighbours together to care for their community. Through clean-up events, tree planting, educational workshops, and volunteer activities, they believe residents will build stronger relationships, become more involved in local civic life, and develop a greater sense of pride and shared responsibility for keeping their neighbourhood healthy and welcoming for everyone.
Organisers hope the initiative will leave a lasting impact by encouraging environmentally responsible habits, expanding green spaces, and building a cleaner, healthier, and more connected Parkchester community.
