A devastating explosion in Staten Island on Friday afternoon has left at least one person dead and more than 30 others injured, including several firefighters who are now battling critical injuries. The tragic incident, which drew a massive emergency response, was confirmed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a press conference where he extended his deepest condolences to the victim’s family and praised the immense courage of the city’s first responders. The identity of the deceased has not yet been publicly released as authorities notify next of kin.
The emergency began at approximately 3:27 p.m. when the FDNY received reports of a fire at a metal structure located at 3075 Richmond Terrace. Firefighters arrived within six minutes to find the area engulfed in heavy smoke with near-zero visibility. According to FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, the fire originated in the basement, initially trapping two workers and prompting a second alarm. Shortly after additional units arrived, a powerful explosion ripped through the building, causing widespread injuries. Over 200 FDNY personnel and 70 specialized units were deployed to the scene to conduct a full search and rescue operation and bring the blaze under control.
The blast took a heavy toll on the responding crews. One fire marshal is currently in critical condition, having sustained a temporal fracture and a brain bleed that required intubation. Another firefighter remains in serious condition with severe muscle injuries, while two other first responders are in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. While officials have announced that all search operations have concluded and the fire is now fully under control, an investigation into the exact cause of the blast is ongoing.
