A landslide in a river upstream along the China-Nepal border has completely blocked the natural flow of the river, creating a massive artificial lake as water continues to accumulate behind the debris of ice and large rocks.
The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu has warned that the water level in the lake has risen significantly and has begun overflowing. There is a serious risk that the natural dam could collapse at any moment, potentially triggering a powerful flood downstream.
The situation developed near the confluence of the Chhoden Khola and Purepu Sangpo rivers in Nepal after a landslide blocked the river channel. Authorities in both China and Nepal are closely monitoring the area around the clock, as the situation remains highly critical for emergency response and rescue operations.
People living in downstream areas have been urged to remain vigilant and closely monitor changes in water levels to minimize the risk of casualties and property damage if the natural dam breaks.
However, there is currently no precise information on the amount of water accumulated in the lake or when the blockage could collapse. The situation has raised further concern as several districts of Nepal, including Rasuwa, are already experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding.
The Chinese Embassy has also urged the public not to panic over unverified reports and to rely only on information from reliable and official sources.
