Growing Influence of Bangladeshi-American Candidates in New York State Assembly Elections

Bangladeshi-American candidates are making a notable mark in New York politics this election cycle. At least six candidates of Bangladeshi descent are running for various State Assembly seats, signalling not only the active engagement of the diaspora community but also generating new excitement and interest in the broader political landscape of New
York. From Queens to the Bronx, their participation sends a clear message: the community is no longer just voters or supporters, but is stepping directly into policy-making roles.

Prominent candidates include Shamsul Haque (District 30), Mahtab Khan (District 24), Mary Zobaida (District 36), Pia Rahman (District 37), Zakir Chowdhury (District 87), and J. Molla Sani (District 32). Each of them is actively engaging with voters, holding community meetings, and raising the issues and concerns of their constituencies.

The petition filing period for the primary election ran from March 30 to April 6. All candidates except Mahtab Khan of District 24 have already submitted their petitions.

Notably, Mary Zobaida of District 36 collected nearly 2,000 signatures during Ramadan, reflecting the community’s strong support and commitment. She expressed deep gratitude
toward her campaign team, volunteers, and the community, highlighting the critical role of active participation. Once petitions are submitted, technical and procedural reviews are conducted by the board, and candidates who clear these steps are officially placed on the primary ballot.

This election marks a new chapter for the Bangladeshi community in New York politics. Where community members were previously voters, campaign workers, or donors, they are now stepping forward as candidates themselves. This development ensures that the voices, experiences, and interests of the immigrant community are more strongly represented in
Albany’s policy-making process.

Bangladeshi-Americans are no longer on the periphery of New York politics. Their presence is becoming increasingly visible, vocal, and organized. In the coming weeks, as petition verification processes conclude, it will become clear which of these highlighted candidates
secure their place on the Democratic primary ballot on June 23. This election cycle underscores the growing political influence of the diaspora community and its expanding impact on New York’s political landscape.
