Trump Abruptly Ends NBC Interview, Says “Let’s Wrap This Up”

President Donald Trump abruptly cut short an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday following a tense exchange with moderator Kristen Welker over compensation for January 6 defendants, election integrity claims, and a proposed “anti-weaponization” fund.

The interview, which was recorded Friday at a farm in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, before Trump participated in a roundtable discussion with local farmers, lasted nearly 50 minutes. As the conversation became increasingly heated, Trump removed his microphone and said, “Let’s wrap this up, because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Take care.” He
then stood up and walked away, ending the interview.

At the center of the dispute was a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund that Trump has advocated for individuals he believes were unfairly targeted by the federal government for political reasons. While the Department of Justice reportedly agreed to establish the fund as part of a settlement involving IRS-related cases, the proposal has faced legal challenges and opposition from several Republican senators.

Trump reiterated his support for the initiative, stating that those he considers victims of government overreach deserve compensation. He said that if given the opportunity, he would ensure that affected individuals receive appropriate financial restitution.

The discussion intensified when Welker asked whether individuals convicted of assaulting police officers during the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot should also be eligible for compensation. Trump argued that many January 6 defendants had been treated unfairly by the justice system and had been pressured into accepting plea agreements.

“These people were destroyed by corrupt policing and the weaponization of government,” Trump said. “Many of them deserve compensation.”

The conversation then shifted to election integrity. Trump once again repeated his longstanding claims that the 2020 presidential election was flawed and also raised concerns about vote counting in California’s recent primary election. Welker challenged those assertions, noting that there is no evidence supporting claims of widespread election fraud.

Trump pointed to the extended vote-counting process in California as suspicious. Welker responded, “But that is not evidence.” The exchange quickly escalated, with Trump criticizing NBC and other news organizations before ultimately ending the interview.

Later, during his meeting with farmers, Trump referred to the incident in a lighter tone, saying, “The rain had me a little grumpy.” Heavy rain could be heard pounding the metal roof of the farm building throughout the interview.

Neither the White House nor NBC issued an official comment regarding the incident.

The interview is expected to generate renewed debate over Trump’s claims regarding January 6 defendants, election integrity, and his ongoing criticism of major news organizations.
