United States — France forward Kylian Mbappé says his focus remains firmly on helping his team progress at the 2026 FIFA World Cup rather than winning the tournament’s Golden Boot.
The race for the competition’s top scorer has intensified, with Mbappé and Argentina captain Lionel Messi currently sharing the lead on six goals each. Norway striker Erling Haaland is close behind with five goals, keeping the battle for the award wide open heading into the quarter-finals.
Messi established himself as the tournament’s leading scorer during the group stage, netting six goals, including a hat-trick against Algeria and additional strikes against Austria and Jordan. Mbappé drew level with the Argentine after scoring twice in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 16.
Speaking to reporters after France secured their place in the quarter-finals, Mbappé downplayed the significance of the individual accolade, insisting that the team’s ambitions take precedence over personal milestones.
“I believe Leo Messi will score more goals,” Mbappé said. “I’m not thinking too much about the Golden Boot. What matters most is our next opponent and how far we can go in this tournament.”
The 27-year-old reiterated that France’s primary objective is to reach the World Cup final, which is scheduled to be played on July 20 in New Jersey.
“As I’ve said before, we want to go as far as possible,” he said. “Our goal is to play in the final.”
Mbappé added that while scoring goals is important, team success remains his highest priority.
“We’re trying to win every match and keep moving forward step by step,” he said. “Of course, scoring helps you climb the scoring charts, but for me, the most important thing is helping the team win.”
