Bangladesh remain firmly in contention for a place in the 2027 ICC World Test Championship final. With 66.67 percentage points, they are currently fourth in the standings, behind Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Australia lead the table with 77.78 percentage points.
With plenty of matches still remaining in the current cycle, however, the standings could change significantly. Bangladesh therefore still have a realistic opportunity to reach their first-ever World Test Championship final.
Seven Tests Could Define Bangladesh’s Campaign
Bangladesh have seven Tests left in the current cycle. Four will be played at home, while the other three will come against Australia and South Africa away from home.
Winning all four home Tests would leave Bangladesh with 61.11 percentage points. Adding one more victory from their remaining away matches would take that figure to 69.44%. Two additional wins could push them as high as 72.22%.
That would put Bangladesh in a very strong position, although the final outcome will also depend on how their rivals perform.
How Many Points Will Be Enough?
There is no fixed points target that guarantees a place in the final. The qualification race depends on results across the entire championship cycle.
Previous editions provide some useful context. New Zealand reached the 2021 final with a points percentage of 70%. India qualified for the 2023 final with 58.80%, while Australia reached the 2025 final with 67.54%.
The numbers suggest that a points percentage around 60% could keep Bangladesh in the race, but it would not provide much security. Reaching around 70% would give them a considerably stronger chance.
So far, no team has failed to reach the final after finishing a championship cycle with at least 70% of the available points.
Home Tests Offer Bangladesh Their Biggest Opportunity
Bangladesh’s most important opportunity could come in their four remaining home Tests.
Playing in familiar conditions should give them an advantage, particularly against England and the West Indies. England and the West Indies are currently seventh and ninth respectively in the standings, making those fixtures particularly important for Bangladesh.
Taking maximum points from those matches would significantly strengthen their position.
The Real Test Awaits Overseas
The biggest challenge will come away from home. Bangladesh still have one Test against Australia and two against South Africa.
Winning in either country would be a major achievement given the difficult conditions Bangladesh are likely to encounter. Maintaining batting discipline and avoiding collapses will be particularly important.
Even one overseas victory, however, could make a substantial difference to Bangladesh’s qualification prospects.
The Equation Is Clear
If Bangladesh can win all four remaining home Tests and secure at least one victory overseas, their points percentage could move close to 69%. That would put them in a strong position to challenge for a place in the final.
They will also need to avoid losing points through slow over rates or other penalties.
For now, Bangladesh’s dream remains very much alive. If they can produce their best cricket across the remaining seven Tests, the team could be on course to make history by reaching the World Test Championship final for the first time.
