Iran Seeks Full Control of Strait of Hormuz, Deputy Foreign Minister Says

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has said Tehran has no intention of initiating talks with the United States, while emphasizing that Iran considers full control of the Strait of Hormuz essential under the current security situation.

Speaking in an interview with Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, Gharibabadi said Iran would not take the first step toward negotiations with Washington, arguing that the current circumstances do not support renewed diplomatic engagement.

He also criticized the United States over its position on international law, saying discussions about legal norms during an ongoing conflict amount to “a contradiction.” Gharibabadi accused Washington of violating international principles while attempting to lecture other countries on legal standards.

Addressing the Strait of Hormuz, the senior Iranian diplomat acknowledged that parts of the strategic waterway are jointly administered with neighboring Oman. However, he argued that the prevailing wartime conditions require Iran to maintain full control over the strait in the interest of national security.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime corridors for global energy supplies, carrying a significant share of internationally traded crude oil and liquefied natural gas. Recent tensions between Iran and the United States have heightened concerns over the security of the vital shipping route.

Analysts say Gharibabadi’s remarks underscore Tehran’s increasingly firm stance on both regional security and its relationship with Washington, as diplomatic tensions between the two countries remain high.
