New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced that the city’s first municipally operated grocery store will soon open in New York City.
According to Eyewitness News, the first city-run grocery store is expected to launch by 2027 in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx.
The report states that the 20,000-square-foot store will be located inside the Peninsula affordable housing complex. The initiative is expected to provide economic relief and greater food accessibility for residents of the South Bronx community.
“We are going to begin using the power of government to lower grocery prices and help put food on New Yorkers’ tables,” Mayor Mamdani said during the announcement.
Under the plan, the city government will cover the costs of land leasing, construction, and renovations for the store. In return, a private contractor will sell products at discounted prices.
The Mamdani administration says the project is part of a broader plan to establish affordable, city-operated grocery stores in every borough of New York City.
Earlier, Mamdani also announced plans for another affordable grocery store named La Marqueta in East Harlem, Manhattan. According to the proposal, that store is expected to open in 2029.
