Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. He was only twenty-nine years old.
Sakib Ali, a talented software engineer from the Bangladeshi community of Georgia, has passed away. His body was recovered by local police onSunday, April 6, from his apartment in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles,California. The untimely end of a life so bright and so full of promisehas cast a long shadow of grief over the Bangladeshi diaspora communities of Georgia, California and far beyond.
Sakib was the only son of Dr. Muhammad Ali Manik, a distinguished paediatrician and Awami League leader based in Georgia. After completing his education at the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology, known widely as Georgia Tech, Sakib went on to join Amazon Music as a software engineer — a testament to both his brilliance and his hard work. He had made his home in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, close to where his career
had taken him. Yet no matter how busy life became, he never let distance loosen the bond with his family back in Georgia. Regular calls and check-ins were simply part of who he was.
That is what made the silence so alarming. From last Tuesday, his family suddenly stopped hearing from him. At first, perhaps, they told themselves he was caught up in work. But as the hours stretched into days, worry turned to dread. His anxious father, Dr. Muhammad Ali, eventually reached out to a friend in Los Angeles, asking him to go and check on Sakib. When that friend arrived at the apartment, he found the front door locked from the inside. Repeated knocking brought no response. He called the local police, who forced the door open — and found Sakib lying motionless inside. In that single moment, an entire family’s world collapsed.
Local law enforcement authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death. Preliminary indications suggest Sakib may have suffered a fatal cardiac event, though his body has been sent to the hospital morgue for a full autopsy. The exact cause of death will only be confirmed once the medical examination is complete.
His heartbroken parents have already made their way to Los Angeles. A first funeral prayer will be held there before his remains are brought back to Atlanta, Georgia, where a second prayer and burial will take place. The entire expatriate Bengali community has rallied around the
grieving family, pouring out condolences and support in their darkest hour.
At just twenty-nine, Sakib Ali had travelled the full arc from Georgia Tech student to Amazon engineer — a journey that filled his family with pride and his community with hope. His passing is a painful reminder of how much loneliness can hide behind the polished surface of a successful life abroad. A family’s greatest joy, a community’s shining light — Sakib Ali is no longer with us. May Allah grant him Jannatul Ferdous and give his beloved family the strength to bear this unbearable loss.
