The United States is reportedly preparing to print a new $250 banknote featuring former President Donald Trump, according to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Speaking at the White House on May 28, Bessent said Congress is considering a proposal that would relax current restrictions preventing living individuals from appearing on U.S. currency. If the law is changed, a new $250 note carrying Trump’s portrait could be introduced.
According to Al Jazeera, Bessent stated that the proposal would allow the image of a living person — specifically President Donald J. Trump — to be used on the new banknote.
He also said the special note is being planned to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence in 1776, and that a preliminary design has already been prepared.
Under existing U.S. law, no living person can appear on American banknotes. If Congress approves the proposal, it would mark a historic exception to that rule.
The initiative has already sparked criticism. Some analysts argue that placing the image of a sitting or living president on national currency could go against democratic traditions and promote personality-centered politics.
During Trump’s administration, similar controversies emerged over efforts to display his portraits in government buildings and create commemorative coins featuring him.
The final decision now depends on whether Congress passes the proposal, which could make Trump the first living U.S. president to appear on an American banknote.
