The United States has temporarily suspended the scheduling of immigrant visa interviews for applicants around the world, according to Reuters. The move comes as President Donald Trump’s administration continues its broader crackdown on immigration.
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said Tuesday that a global training program has been launched across U.S. embassies and consulates. Visa interview scheduling will be adjusted in coordination with the training program.
The administration has introduced a series of measures aimed at reducing immigration to the United States, including large-scale deportation operations, visa and green-card cancellations, and increased visa denials.
Officials have also cited political views and participation in pro-Palestinian protests opposing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as factors in some immigration-related decisions.
Trump has argued that the measures are intended to strengthen U.S. national security. However, several of his administration’s immigration policies have faced legal challenges.
Last Friday, a U.S. judge struck down an administration policy that had suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries. The judge ruled that the policy exceeded the legal authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The State Department has not disclosed how long the new training program will last or provided detailed information about it. The department said, however, that the training is designed to help consular officers identify applicants who could potentially become dependent on U.S. government benefits in the future.
The department also said the training would help ensure that visa applicants are evaluated consistently and comprehensively under the same standards.

According to the report, applicants who had already received interview appointments at U.S. embassies and consulates were sent emails informing them that their interview dates were being changed. They were told that new dates would be provided later.
The Trump administration’s tougher immigration policies have also drawn criticism from human rights organizations. Critics argue that some of the measures are discriminatory and undermine freedom of expression and the right to due process.
Rights advocates have further warned that the immigration crackdown is creating an increasingly hostile environment in the United States, particularly for racial and ethnic minorities. Some fear increased scrutiny or discrimination based on their ethnic backgrounds.
