The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched a massive nationwide operation against illegal and substandard hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers. The Ministry stated that this step was taken following long-standing allegations of irregularities, unlicensed operations, and poor quality of medical services.
This government initiative is being viewed as a crucial step toward restoring discipline in the health sector and ensuring safe medical care for the general public. Concerns had been rising over patients’ lives being put at risk in unauthorized facilities, which was cited as the
primary driver for this crackdown.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain issued a stern message regarding the matter, stating: “If any hospital or clinic fails to maintain the minimum standards of healthcare, it will be shut down immediately—no concessions will be granted.”
He further added that the operation, which began in the capital, will be extended in phases to the remote areas of the country. Simultaneously, strict legal action will be taken against those operating hospitals or clinics illegally.
When Deshj Tribune’s Senior Special Correspondent Al Mamun contacted the Health Minister from America, the Minister reiterated his stance, saying, “There will be no compromise on ensuring the quality of healthcare.” He also noted that various agencies under the Ministry have already intensified field-level operations.
Roots of the Crisis
Experts believe that the general public suffered due to numerous irregularities within the Health Ministry during the previous government’s tenure. Investigations revealed that:
• Unlicensed hospitals and clinics were allowed to operate.
• The verification process for doctors’ and nurses’ certificates suffered from mismanagement.
• Substandard medicines and medical equipment entered the market.
• There was a lack of supervision regarding testing protocols and hygiene compliance, risking patient safety.
• Allegations of financial irregularities and nepotism in the approval of hospitals and clinics were also prevalent.
Ministry sources indicate that these new measures aim to eliminate these irregularities and restore transparency. As part of the operation, licenses are being verified, the quality of medical equipment is being tested, hygiene protocols are being checked, and the valid
certifications of doctors are being scrutinized. Where irregularities are found, immediate actions such as fines, sealing the premises, or permanent closure are being taken.

Reasons for Closure
Several grave irregularities were discovered during the inspections:
• Fake Practitioners: Individuals were found treating patients using false identities.
• Lack of Specialists: Several hospitals had no authorized specialist doctors on-site.
• Unhygienic Conditions: Facilities were found to be extremely dirty and unsanitary, posing a high risk of infection to patients.
Following these “red-handed” discoveries, mobile courts were conducted to shut down the operations immediately. At the conclusion of the raids, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain told the media: “Playing with people’s lives will not be tolerated under any circumstances.” He announced that this “cleansing drive” by the Ministry of Health would continue in the public interest.
