U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that any of its “fast attack ships” approaching the Strait of Hormuz blockade area would be “immediately eliminated.” Posting on Truth Social, Trump claimed that a large portion of Iran’s naval capabilities has already been destroyed, leaving only a limited number of small, high-speed vessels.
He added that these smaller vessels, which Iran refers to as “fast attack ships,” were previously not considered a significant threat. However, he warned that if they come close to the blockade zone, they will be “immediately eliminated.” Trump further emphasized that any U.S. response would be “quick and brutal.”
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that a sweeping naval blockade operation began Monday morning, targeting maritime activity linked to Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. According to CENTCOM, the operation applies uniformly to vessels of all nations, while still maintaining freedom of navigation for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to non-Iranian destinations.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, with nearly 20 percent of global oil shipments passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption in the region is widely expected to have major implications for global energy markets.
Iran has recently faced accusations from the United States and international shipping stakeholders of attempting to impose restrictions on navigation in the strait, including toll-like measures and controlled passage.
The escalating rhetoric comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Tehran, particularly as diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear program have stalled. Defense analysts note that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has long relied on fast, maneuverable naval craft designed for swarm tactics in confined waters, posing a persistent concern for U.S. naval forces.
With the blockade now underway and warnings intensifying, the risk of direct confrontation in the region appears to be increasing.
