New Phase of Middle East Conflict: Houthi Missile and Drone Attacks Raise Tensions

Houthi rebels have launched a major series of attacks in Yemen’s western Taiz and Hodeidah provinces, heightening concerns over renewed instability in the country.

According to Yemen’s government military forces media center, the Houthis launched a total of 14 ballistic missiles and drones toward populated areas. Turkey’s Anadolu Agency also reported the development.

Drones Intercepted by Air Defenses

A military source cited by the media center said several drones were intercepted over the Taiz front, while additional unmanned aircraft were shot down by air-defense systems over different areas along Yemen’s western coast.

The source praised Yemeni forces for maintaining a high level of combat readiness, saying troops remained determined and military units in several areas were on heightened alert.

The military also claimed that none of the ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis managed to hit positions held by Yemeni government forces along the western coast.

Ground Fighting Reported in Taiz

Yemeni forces said they had also neutralized the source of the Houthi attacks and the associated threat in the Al-Qadaha area of the Al-Barah front in western Taiz.

Ground clashes reportedly broke out between the two sides in the area as fighting intensified.

Violence Returns After Period of Relative Calm

Yemen had experienced a relatively calm period since a truce took effect in April 2022, despite the country’s conflict having continued for nearly 12 years.

However, fighting has resurfaced in recent weeks across several provinces, including Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea and Taiz.

The Houthis have controlled the capital, Sanaa, as well as large parts of Yemen since seizing power in September 2014.

Yemen Remains in a Severe Humanitarian Crisis

Years of conflict have left Yemen facing one of the world’s most serious humanitarian and economic crises.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government is backed by a Saudi-led coalition, while the coalition has long accused Iran of providing support to the Houthis.

The latest escalation comes amid broader regional tensions. The Houthis were also reported to have announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia in July, raising further concerns about security and shipping routes in the region.
