Australia has faced a significant setback ahead of their ODI series against Bangladesh, as regular captain Mitchell Marsh and star batter Travis Head have both been ruled out. In their absence, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will take over the captaincy.
Neither Marsh nor Head featured in the recent ODI series against Pakistan, which Australia lost 2-1. Marsh is currently sidelined with a lingering ankle injury, while Head is on leave for personal reasons. Adding to the injury list, leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha will also miss the ODI leg of the tour due to a hamstring injury. However, Marsh is still expected to travel with the squad to continue his rehabilitation ahead of the T20I series.
To bolster the squad, young batter Ollie Peake and hard-hitter Matt Short have been retained following the Pakistan tour. Off-spinner Todd Murphy has been called up as a replacement for Sangha; although Murphy has seven Test caps to his name, he is yet to make his limited-overs debut for Australia.
National selector Tony Dodemaide noted that while they had hoped Marsh would be fit for the ODIs, his ankle requires more recovery time. Regarding Head, Dodemaide confirmed that although he was initially named for both series, he was subsequently granted personal leave.
