TEHRAN — Iran has unveiled the core conditions of its latest peace proposal to the United States, detailing sweeping demands that include the immediate withdrawal of American forces from areas surrounding the Islamic Republic.
On Tuesday, May 19, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi spoke publicly for the first time regarding the stipulations of the new diplomatic framework, which follows Tehran’s formal response to Washington’s earlier proposal to end the conflict in West Asia.
According to Iranian state media, the cornerstone of Tehran’s plan is an absolute cessation of hostilities across all fronts. This explicitly includes ending the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, where clashes with Israel persist despite prior ceasefire agreements. Furthermore, Tehran is demanding full financial compensation for all damages incurred during the war.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi stated that the proposal also requires the complete lifting of all economic sanctions and the immediate release of frozen Iranian assets held internationally. The termination of the U.S. Navy’s blockade on Iranian ports is listed as another non-negotiable condition.
The demands represent a significant shift from Iran’s previous diplomatic offers. According to Reuters, the current framework is a stark departure from an earlier proposal that U.S. President Donald Trump categorically dismissed as “garbage.”
Despite the stiff conditions, the ongoing negotiations appear to have paused immediate military escalation. President Trump confirmed that he has temporarily suspended a pre-planned military strike on Iran, citing diplomatic progress.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump revealed that leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates directly requested the pause. “They asked to suspend the military strike we had planned for tomorrow… because highly serious and significant discussions are currently underway between the two sides,” Trump wrote.
However, the U.S. President paired the diplomatic pause with a stark ultimatum. He warned that if an acceptable agreement is not reached, the U.S. military is under standing orders to remain completely prepared to execute a full-scale, major military strike on Iran at a moment’s notice.
