At least 14 people were killed and 11 others injured in a massive explosion at a temporary storage site for weapons and remnants of war near the town of Sarmada in Syria’s Idlib province.
Syrian state television reported the incident on Wednesday, September 9.
The country’s Defense Ministry said the site was being used to temporarily store weapons and remnants of war before they were transported elsewhere. Several ministry personnel were among those injured in the blast.
Multiple units from Syria’s Civil Defense and fire services were deployed to the scene shortly after the explosion.
However, firefighting efforts were hampered by a series of subsequent blasts, while thick smoke continued to rise from the site for several hours.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the initial explosion.
The incident comes just days after another deadly blast in Idlib province. On September 1, a vehicle carrying ammunition exploded unexpectedly in the Binnish area.
According to the Defense Ministry, five people were killed and several others were seriously injured in that incident.
