Save the People, a nonprofit organization, distributed groceries and educational materials to about 300 residents in the Jamaica Hillside neighborhood of Queens on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, bringing food assistance and community support to local families.
Families received essential grocery items, including chicken, rice, fresh vegetables and canned foods. The distribution was organized to help low-income families and other residents who are struggling with rising food prices and everyday household expenses. For many participants, the program offered not only practical assistance but also a sense of support from their community.
The event also focused on children and families. Along with groceries, volunteers distributed educational materials for children, encouraging young people to continue learning while providing parents with useful resources for their families.
Young volunteers played an important role throughout the event. They helped prepare and organize grocery packages, welcomed residents and assisted with distributing food and educational materials. Their enthusiastic participation brought energy to the program and demonstrated how young people can contribute meaningfully to their neighborhoods.
Organizers said community-based efforts like this can help address food insecurity while bringing residents, volunteers and local organizations closer together. Through food assistance, educational support and volunteer engagement, the initiative highlighted the importance of neighbors helping neighbors and working together to build a caring, connected and supportive Jamaica community.
Several community leaders and representatives attended the distribution, including Mohammed Molla, a Democratic Candidate for New York State Assembly District 32; Fokrul Islam, president of Jamaica Muslim Center; Fatima Niass, of Save the People; and Rashida Akter of Prothom Alo Foundation.
