New York, April 28, 2026: Bangladesh has called for renewed and accelerated global efforts toward nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation at the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
Speaking at the general debate, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said that even after nearly eight decades since the founding of the United Nations, the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons remains unrealized. He warned that continued nuclear proliferation poses a serious threat to global peace and security, while also hindering sustainable development worldwide.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s longstanding position, the ambassador noted that the country has consistently advocated for both nuclear and conventional disarmament. He emphasized that Bangladesh has voluntarily remained non-nuclear despite being situated in a region with nuclear-armed states.
Chowdhury also called on nuclear-weapon states to fulfil their legal obligations under Article VI of the NPT, which commits them to pursue disarmament. He urged broader global adherence to disarmament treaties and stressed the need for collective action.
Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment, he said the country will continue to promote global disarmament through dialogue, trust-building measures, and international cooperation, to achieve a safer world free from the threat of nuclear weapons.
