Alcohol Banned at Some French Music Festival Events Amid Severe Heatwave

PARIS — Authorities in France have banned alcohol consumption at selected events during the national music festival, Fête de la Musique, as the country grapples with an intense and dangerous heatwave.

The annual celebration, which has marked the summer solstice for over four decades, typically draws millions of people to streets across French cities. Last year alone, approximately two million people participated in festivities in Paris.

However, with nearly one-third of the country currently under the highest level of heatwave alert, the government has implemented strict restrictions in areas designated as “Red Alert” zones.

“We have issued directives to prohibit the serving of alcohol at all events organized by the state and its affiliated agencies,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s office confirmed.

Escalating Temperatures
Meteorologists have warned that temperatures in areas ranging from the southwest to the Paris region and Burgundy could reach between 39°C and 40°C on Sunday, with some locations expected to see peaks of 41°C. Forecasts indicate that the situation may worsen on Monday, with temperatures potentially nearing historical record highs.

Reducing Strain on Healthcare
Government officials have urged the public to limit alcohol consumption to alleviate the mounting pressure on emergency and health services. By curbing alcohol-related incidents, authorities aim to allow medical personnel to prioritize care for the most vulnerable populations.

The current heatwave, which is affecting large parts of Europe, has seen temperatures climb 10°C to 15°C above the seasonal average in many regions.
