Iftar Gathering: A Warm Community Evening in New Jersey with the Taste of Home

A unique and heartfelt iftar gathering was held in Central New Jersey, bringing together members of the Bangladeshi community in a warm and intimate setting. Organized by cultural activist Jannatul Ferdous Tumpa, the event took place on Wednesday, March 18, at the “Asian Bites” restaurant in Edison. Hosted by the Tumpa–Habib couple, the arrangement was simple yet deeply welcoming.

Edison—often referred to as the “Delhi of New Jersey”—is predominantly home to the Indian community. However, the presence of Bangladeshis in the area is gradually becoming more visible. Surrounded by vibrant Bangladeshi hubs like Paterson, New York City, Atlantic City, and Philadelphia, Edison is emerging as a quieter but evolving centre for a growing and progressive Bangladeshi community. The gathering reflected that presence, with many community members in attendance.

The highlight of the evening was the authentic Bangladeshi cuisine. The menu featured biryani, white chicken korma, eggs, semai, and jilapi—creating an early taste of Eid. The quality, flavor, and presentation of the food carried the warmth of home, something often
hard to find in diaspora life. Attendees praised both the taste and the hospitality.

The event was more than just an iftar—it was an opportunity to reconnect. Familiar faces came together, sharing conversations, laughter, and meaningful moments. In the fast-paced life of the diaspora, such gatherings play an important role in strengthening community bonds.

Participants highly appreciated Jannatul Ferdous Tumpa’s initiative. Many noted that such a well-organized and sincere gathering, arranged on a personal level, sets a positive example for the community.

The evening concluded with advance Eid greetings from the hosts.

Blending the flavours of home with the warmth of togetherness, the iftar gathering felt like a small piece of Bangladesh in the heart of New Jersey.
