Free Eid Food Distribution by Astoria Welfare Society

By Rashida Akhtar: To mark Eid-ul-Fitr, Astoria Welfare Society USA Inc. organized a free
food distribution program in Astoria, New York, to support financially struggling families in the local community. The initiative, held on 36th Avenue, saw participation from a significant number of families.

Organizers said the primary goal of the program was to help underprivileged families celebrate Eid with dignity by providing essential food items ahead of the festival. Invitations were extended through SMS, social media announcements, and direct phone calls to ensure community members could benefit from the initiative.

The distributed food packages included pasta, flour, sugar, milk, cooking oil, and fresh vegetables such as onions and potatoes. According to the organizers, this effort is part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening community support and ensuring that vulnerable families are not left behind during important cultural and religious occasions.

The program was sponsored by Anthem (an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Association) and supported by Muna Social Services. Organizers noted that such collaborative efforts among different organizations are key to successfully serving the community.

The initiative was led by the organization’s President Sohel Ahmed, General Secretary MD Jabed Uddin, and Vice President Kayes Ahmed. Community leaders Dewan Shahed, Anwar Hossain, and Abdur Rahman, along with volunteers, also played active roles in the event.

Representing Anthem, Community Outreach Manager Wendy Dominguez and Lead Marketplace Facilitated Enroller, Md. Habibur Chowdhury was present at the event. They emphasized that such programs not only meet immediate needs but also help foster unity and compassion within the community.

Astoria Welfare Society USA Inc. has long been involved in charitable activities and community services across New York, particularly for immigrant and underserved populations. This Eid food distribution program was widely appreciated as part of its ongoing commitment to community support.
