Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud produced a superb all-round bowling performance, taking seven wickets across two innings as Kent defeated Worcestershire by 84 runs in the County Championship. His match-winning contribution also earned him the Player of the Match award.
Hasan Strikes Twice in the Final Session
Kent set Worcestershire a daunting target of 390 runs in Canterbury. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 295 in their second innings during the third session of the fourth and final day on Saturday.
Hasan finished with 3 wickets for 51 runs in the innings. He had earlier claimed 4 for 68 in Worcestershire’s first innings, taking his match tally to seven wickets.
The 26-year-old fast bowler had already taken 12 wickets in Kent’s previous two matches, prompting the county to bring him back into the side. He immediately justified their decision, taking his tally to 19 wickets in three Championship appearances this season at an average of 18.31.
Crucial Breakthroughs
Hasan played a key role in breaking Worcestershire’s resistance on the final day.
He first trapped Adam Hose lbw, ending a 76-run partnership. He then bowled Henry Cullen to break another stand worth 86 runs.
Later, with Worcestershire at 265 for five, Hasan dismissed Ben Allison lbw to complete his third wicket of the innings.
South African pacer Keith Dudgeon also took three wickets for 63 runs, while England seamer Matt Milnes claimed three for 51, including the final wicket that completed Kent’s victory. New Zealand quick Matt Quinn took the remaining wicket.
Captain’s Century Goes in Vain
Worcestershire captain Brett D’Oliveira fought hard with an unbeaten century, scoring 103 from 221 balls, including 12 boundaries.
However, his effort could not prevent defeat. Worcestershire collapsed dramatically at the end, losing their final five wickets for just 30 runs.
Kent Climb to Second in Division Two
The victory moved Kent into second place in Division Two as they continue their push for promotion to the top division.
After 11 matches, Kent have accumulated 170 points, while leaders Durham have 210 from the same number of games. With three rounds remaining, Kent remain firmly in the promotion race.
