Julián Álvarez’s 112th-Minute Strike Sends Argentina into World Cup Semi-finals

A moment of brilliance from Julián Álvarez deep into extra time powered Argentina into the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, as the reigning champions defeated Switzerland 3-1 after a dramatic contest that remained deadlocked until the 112th minute.

With the match tied at 1-1 and Switzerland defending resolutely despite being reduced to 10 men, Álvarez produced the decisive breakthrough. The Argentine forward unleashed a powerful long-range effort that beat the goalkeeper and sparked celebrations among players and supporters, putting Argentina ahead for the first time since the opening half.

Argentina had taken the lead through Alexis Mac Allister before Switzerland restored parity in the 67th minute with a goal from Dan Ndoye. As the match appeared destined for penalties, Álvarez delivered the defining moment of the night. Lautaro Martínez later added another goal in the closing stages of extra time to seal a 3-1 victory and secure Argentina’s place in the last four.

Born on January 31, 2000, in the town of Calchín in Argentina’s Córdoba Province, Álvarez developed a reputation for his quick movement and sharp finishing from an early age. Nicknamed “La Araña” (“The Spider”), he rose through the youth ranks of River Plate before making his senior debut in 2018.

His rapid development earned him a move to Manchester City, where he collected multiple major trophies before joining Atlético Madrid in 2024. Standing 1.70 metres tall, Álvarez has built his reputation not through physical presence but through intelligent movement, relentless pressing, clinical finishing and an ability to create opportunities for teammates.

Despite his relatively young career, Álvarez has already assembled an impressive list of honours, including the Copa Libertadores with River Plate, the FIFA World Cup, Copa América and Finalissima with Argentina, as well as the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Manchester City.

Having already helped Argentina lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América, Álvarez once again delivered on the biggest stage. His decisive strike against Switzerland not only secured victory but also kept Argentina’s title defence alive, adding another memorable chapter to his growing international career.
