According to a report by the Hong Kong-based media outlet *HK01*, multiple humanoid robot beggars have been observed in major Chinese metropolitan areas, including Beijing, Chengdu, and Fuzhou. Rather than being isolated incidents, this appears to indicate an emerging trend.
The individuals responsible for deploying these robots have meticulously replicated traditional begging postures. The humanoids are seen kneeling on the ground, bowing their heads, or sitting in hunched positions. Placed in front of them are signs with messages such as, *”I don’t have money to charge my phone”* or *”Please help pay my electricity bill.”* For convenience, a QR code is displayed alongside the messages to facilitate digital transactions.
Online Viral Sensation and Speculation
Images of these robotic beggars went viral across Chinese social media last week, triggering intense online debate. One segment of netizens expressed deep concern over the creeping dominance of AI in every facet of human life. Conversely, others questioned the authenticity and long-term viability of this trend.
Currently, top-tier humanoid robots—such as the Unitree G1 and H2 models—command exceptionally high market prices, making them economically impractical for actual street begging. Consequently, observers suggest this could either be a publicity stunt aimed at drawing public attention or a form of performance art intended to provoke thought on the increasingly complex relationship between humanity and AI.
