Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar has consolidated robust labor support for her re-election campaign in Assembly District 38, securing major endorsements from TWU Local 100 and DC 37. These influential unions join a growing coalition of organized labor backing Rajkumar, which already includes 1199SEIU, 32BJ SEIU, the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, the AFL-CIO, IBEW Local 3, PEF, the NYC District Council of Carpenters, and CSEA. Leaders from both newly endorsing organizations pointed to Rajkumar’s extensive background as a workers’ rights attorney and her legislative record in Albany focused on expanding protections and securing fair wages for essential workers across New York City.
John Chiarello, President of TWU Local 100—which represents roughly 41,000 active public transit and private transportation workers—praised Rajkumar as a tireless fighter who understands that transit workers are the backbone of the city’s economy.
Rajkumar expressed deep gratitude for the support, reaffirming her commitment to safe working conditions and economic opportunities for families across her district, which spans Ridgewood, Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, Ozone Park, and Glendale. She similarly welcomed the backing of DC 37, the city’s largest public sector union representing over 150,000 members, noting her intent to continue pushing for labor priorities like reforming the Tier 6 pension system. These endorsements come as Rajkumar, the first South Asian-American woman elected to the State Assembly, faces a challenge in her re-election bid from progressive opponent David Orkin, who is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America.
