Mayor Mamdani Launches New Initiative Honoring Child Care Workers

The New York City administration has launched a new initiative to recognize the dignity and rights of child care and early childhood education workers. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has officially declared May as “Child Care Educator Appreciation Month.”

Highlighting the essential role child care workers play in supporting millions of working families across the city, the mayor said the labor and responsibilities of this sector have long been undervalued.

In a statement released from City Hall on May 8, the administration announced that this year’s national “Provider Appreciation Day” would be expanded into a month-long program. The initiative aims not only to honor child care educators but also to establish them as active partners in shaping the future universal child care system.

Mayor Mamdani said, “It is impossible to imagine any child care system without our child care educators. For many years, their work has been treated as a routine responsibility, even though they play a crucial role in keeping New York’s economy running.” He added that if the city truly wants to build a universal child care system, these workers must also have a place at the center of policymaking.

He acknowledged that a declaration alone is not enough. Much work remains to ensure fair wages, professional security, and social recognition for child care educators. However, he described the initiative as the beginning of long-term reform.

Amy Lis, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Child Care and Early Childhood Education, said, “Like thousands of New York families, I go to work every day trusting my children’s early childhood educators to care for them. They are not just looking after children — they are helping shape the next generation.” She added that workers in this sector have long been denied the recognition they deserve, and the current administration wants to change that.

Meanwhile, New York City Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels said the first few years of a child’s life are the most important. He noted that society has a responsibility to express gratitude to those who teach, encourage, and build the foundation of children’s potential during this critical period.

According to city administration data, more than 10,000 licensed child care programs are currently operating in New York City. A large portion of these are small businesses founded by women entrepreneurs, including many Black and immigrant women. These institutions care for hundreds of thousands of children every day, enabling countless parents to actively participate in the workforce.

As part of the month-long initiative, several programs have been organized to honor child care workers. These include a dinner at Gracie Mansion, visits to various child care centers, and a “Provider Listening Tour.” The city administration has also released a special video highlighting the work and contributions of educators.

The Mamdani administration’s recent efforts to expand the child care sector have also drawn attention. Shortly after taking office, the mayor jointly announced with New York Governor Kathy Hochul full funding for the city’s 3-K program. The administration also announced plans to launch a 2-K program for the first time in New York’s history. Later, officials confirmed the expansion of 3-K services into 56 additional ZIP code areas and selected four communities for the new 2-K rollout.

In the final week of April, applications also opened for “The Little Apple,” New York City’s first free child care pilot program, initially available to city employees.

Analysts believe the initiative reflects a broader shift in viewing child care not merely as a social service, but as a cornerstone of the city’s economy and the survival of working families. In particular, it is expected to have long-term positive effects on women’s workforce participation, support for working parents, and the improvement of early childhood education.
