Tens of Thousands Protest in Tel Aviv Demanding Netanyahu’s Resignation and End to Lebanon Conflict

TEL AVIV – Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tel Aviv overnight on Saturday, May 9, demanding the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and an end to the ongoing military operations in southern Lebanon.

The demonstrations highlight a deepening rift within Israeli society as the nation grapples with multi-front conflicts and a brewing domestic crisis over military draft exemptions for the Ultra-Orthodox community.

‘A National Catastrophe’
Speaking to Reuters during the protest, David Alkan, an 83-year-old retiree, described the current administration as a “catastrophe.” He accused the government of systematically misleading the public with fabricated narratives.

“I am more afraid of the internal divisions within Israel than I am of Iran,” Alkan said, specifically criticizing the refusal of Ultra-Orthodox groups to serve in the military while the rest of the nation remains on a war footing.

Provocative Slogans and Public Anger
Social media footage from the scene showed protesters carrying highly provocative placards. Slogans such as “Stop the Genocide” and “Forget October 7” were visible among the crowd. In a sharp personal attack on the Prime Minister, some demonstrators used the moniker “Bibi Escobar,” a satirical comparison between Netanyahu (nicknamed ‘Bibi’) and the notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

A Government Under Pressure
Political analysts suggest that the Netanyahu administration is facing its most significant challenge yet. The intersection of international pressure over the Lebanon-Iran conflict and the domestic outrage regarding mandatory military service has created a volatile political environment.

With general elections looming later this year, the persistent unrest and internal fractures within the ruling coalition may pose a terminal threat to Netanyahu’s grip on power
