DHAKA — Following their historic Test series sweep against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, the Bangladesh national cricket team is shifting its focus firmly to the future. Despite breaking a 13-match winless streak to secure their maiden series victory over Pakistan, newly appointed head coach Phil Simmons insists the team is looking ahead rather than dwelling on past glories as they prepare for Friday’s home Test.
Speaking at a press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday, Simmons made his stance clear.
“That is history. It is in the past now,” Simmons stated. “We want to create new history. Therefore, our focus is squarely on Friday’s match. What happens there is what matters; what happened before is irrelevant.”
While the monumental 2024 series victory remains a talking point among fans, Simmons hinted that it holds little sway in the current dressing room. He emphasized the necessity of adapting to current conditions.
“Yes, keeping that in mind boosts our confidence, knowing we won our last game,” Simmons explained. “But this is a new match at a new venue. We are playing in Bangladesh now, not in Pakistan. We have to leave those things behind and concentrate on Friday’s match.”
Ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series, promising pace bowler Nahid Rana has been a key topic of discussion. However, Simmons confirmed that the fast bowler’s participation will rely heavily on workload management, indicating that Rana is likely to feature in at least one of the Tests.
“After the first Test, we will assess his condition and see how many overs he has bowled,” the head coach noted. “That is how workload management operates. We will monitor his workload closely and then determine if he can play the second Test.”
