DHAKA — Javier Cabrera’s record-breaking tenure as the head coach of the Bangladesh national football team officially concluded in April, marking the end of a transformative era for the Bengal Tigers. The Spanish tactician leaves behind a legacy of historic milestones and a rejuvenated squad after serving for over four years.
Taking the helm in 2022, Cabrera made an immediate impact by guiding Bangladesh to their first SAFF Championship semifinal since 2009, earning widespread early acclaim. However, his tenure was not without friction. Tactical decisions and the team’s style of play occasionally drew sharp criticism from fans and pundits. Despite intermittent calls for his dismissal, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) retained confidence in his project, allowing him to complete his four-year and four-month stint—the longest of any head coach in the nation’s history.
In a heartfelt farewell statement published on LinkedIn, Cabrera highlighted the squad’s evolution and the resilient mindset they developed.
“We have traveled a long way on and off the pitch. From playing in front of a few hundred spectators to unforgettable nights in jam-packed stadiums, we have created moments that will forever remain a part of Bangladesh’s football history,” Cabrera wrote.
Under his guidance, Bangladesh achieved several notable landmarks. Cabrera forged a competitive unit capable of challenging the continent’s heavyweights, securing a historic victory over regional rivals India—their first in 22 years—and attaining their highest FIFA ranking since 2016.
Cabrera also expressed immense pride in his focus on youth development. During his tenure, 21 Under-23 players made their senior international debuts, transforming Bangladesh into one of Asia’s youngest national teams and establishing a robust foundation for the future.
“I depart with deep gratitude and pride. I firmly believe that Bangladesh football is moving in the right direction and that its best days are yet to come,” he added, thanking the players, staff, fans, and the BFF.
Over his 39-match tenure, Cabrera secured 10 victories for the national side. As the Cabrera era draws to a close, the BFF is expected to officially announce his successor this coming Friday.
