Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi from his position as head of the country’s armed forces.
The decision comes just days after the removal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a move that sparked protests across Ukraine. Initial reports suggesting tensions between Fedorov and Syrskyi were later confirmed.
Fedorov, 35, had earned widespread praise for accelerating reforms within the Ministry of Defense, modernizing the armed forces, and promoting anti-corruption initiatives. In contrast, the 60-year-old Syrskyi was viewed by many Ukrainians as a commander with a Soviet-style leadership approach who was reluctant to pursue major military reforms.
Drapatyi Appointed New Commander
Syrskyi has been succeeded by 43-year-old General Mykhailo Drapatyi, a respected combat veteran known for his battlefield experience.
In a Facebook statement after assuming command, Drapatyi said:
“I will carry out this responsibility with full dedication, complete focus, and deep respect for those who are defending our country today.”
He also paid tribute to his predecessor, adding:
“I am grateful to General Syrskyi for his continued service in strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces. I grew up in this army.”
Zelenskyy Thanks Syrskyi
In a video address released Tuesday night, President Zelenskyy praised Syrskyi’s military leadership, particularly his key role in the successful defense of Kyiv during the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
The leadership change marks another significant shift within Ukraine’s military command as Kyiv continues to adapt its strategy amid the ongoing war with Russia.
