Where Dead Children Return Coins After Dark and Phantom Cars Give Chase: The Mystery of Clinton Road

It is the middle of the night. Dense forests stretch endlessly in every direction, with rows of trees lining both sides of a deserted road. There are no houses, no streetlights and no signs of civilisation. Beyond the narrow beam of a car’s headlights lies nothing but darkness.

Suddenly, two headlights appear in the rearview mirror. A vehicle is speeding towards the driver from behind. But moments later, it vanishes without a trace.

Where did the car go? Who was driving it? Was there ever a car at all?

Stories like these have circulated for decades about a remote road in New Jersey, just an hour’s drive from New York City. Its name is Clinton Road.

Stretching for just 10 miles, the road has become a subject of fascination around the world. In a 2026 ranking published by SIXT, an international car rental company, Clinton Road was named the world’s most haunted road. With Halloween approaching, its chilling legends have once again captured public attention.

But what makes this road so frightening? Are supernatural forces really at work here, or is the mystery a product of human imagination, darkness and centuries-old folklore?

## Ten miles of road, a century of mystery

Clinton Road is located in West Milford, Passaic County, New Jersey. The winding road begins near Route 23 and extends towards the Upper Greenwood Lake area, passing through dense forests, reservoirs and hilly terrain.

During the day, Clinton Road may look like any other rural highway. But after sunset, the atmosphere changes dramatically. Thick vegetation blocks out the remaining light, while the long stretches of deserted roadway, sharp bends and absence of nearby homes create an unsettling sense of isolation.

The legends surrounding the road are nothing new. Weird NJ, a popular magazine devoted to New Jersey’s unusual local history and folklore, has spent years documenting strange tales associated with Clinton Road. The publication has even released special collections featuring local history and more than 200 letters from readers describing unusual experiences.

Ghosts, witches, mysterious lights, black pickup trucks and strange creatures lurking in the woods — the stories cover almost every imaginable horror.

## The dead child beneath the bridge who supposedly returns coins

One of Clinton Road’s most famous legends centres on a place known as the Ghost Boy Bridge.

According to local folklore, a young child died many years ago after falling from a bridge into the water below. The child’s spirit is said to haunt the surrounding area.

One version of the story claims that if someone drops a coin into the water beneath the bridge late at night, it mysteriously finds its way back to them. Some visitors also claim to have seen the outline of a child in the darkness. Another version suggests that anyone standing near the edge of the bridge may feel an invisible force pushing them.

These stories are associated with a bridge over Clinton Brook and a nearby bend known as Dead Man’s Curve.

However, there is no reliable evidence confirming the child’s death as described in the legend or the alleged appearance of a ghost. Despite this, the bridge remains one of the most talked-about locations along Clinton Road.

## A black truck appears from nowhere, gives chase and suddenly disappears

Another widely circulated legend involves a mysterious black pickup truck.

According to the story, drivers travelling along Clinton Road late at night may suddenly notice a truck approaching from behind. It follows dangerously close, accelerating whenever the driver of the car speeds up. The pursuit can feel deliberate, as though someone is trying to force the driver off the road.

Yet, before the car reaches the end of the route, the truck supposedly disappears.

Other accounts describe mysterious sports cars, headlights with no visible driver and shadowy figures standing along the roadside.

None of these stories has been conclusively verified. Nevertheless, they have been passed down through generations, strengthening Clinton Road’s reputation as one of New Jersey’s most frightening destinations.

## An abandoned castle in the woods and rumours of sinister rituals

The mysteries of Clinton Road extend beyond the highway itself. The surrounding forest has its own history, including the remains of an old castle.

Known as Cross Castle, the structure was reportedly built by businessman Richard Cross in the early 20th century. It was once an expansive private property but was eventually abandoned and damaged by fire. Much of what remained of the structure was later removed.

Over time, the abandoned castle became the subject of increasingly sinister stories.

Rumours suggested that secretive groups gathered there at night. Some claimed that satanic worship and mysterious rituals took place on the property. Other stories alleged that the Ku Klux Klan, a racist organisation, held secret meetings there.

Many of these allegations lack reliable historical evidence. However, the castle’s ruins and its long-abandoned surroundings have helped keep the stories alive.

But is everything associated with Clinton Road merely folklore? Not entirely. The area also has a documented history of violent crime.

## Beyond the ghost stories: A real murder case

Clinton Road’s dark reputation is not based solely on supernatural tales. The road has also been linked to an actual criminal case.

In May 1983, the body of a man named Daniel Deppner was recovered from a wooded area near the road. The case later became associated with the criminal history of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer known as “The Iceman”.

The murder added another disturbing dimension to Clinton Road’s reputation. Unlike the stories of ghosts and phantom vehicles, this was a real criminal incident.

However, the existence of a documented murder does not establish the truth of the supernatural legends associated with the area.

## More than one million Google searches: The world’s most haunted road?

SIXT published its 2026 ranking of the world’s most haunted roads, placing Clinton Road in first position. The Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire ranked second, followed by California’s Route 66 in third place.

According to figures published by the company, Clinton Road attracted approximately 1.08 million Google searches and more than 260,000 searches on TikTok.

The ranking was based on an analysis of online search interest in supposedly haunted roads. It should not be interpreted as scientific evidence that ghosts actually exist at any of these locations.

On October 10, the *New York Post* also published a feature on Clinton Road, bringing renewed attention to the New Jersey highway just weeks before Halloween.

The road’s notoriety has even inspired the entertainment industry. In 2019, a horror film titled *Clinton Road* was released, featuring popular rapper and actor Ice-T.

## What does the police say? No confirmed ghost sightings in decades

Perhaps the most striking aspect of Clinton Road’s reputation is the contrast between its frightening legends and the position of local law enforcement.

The official website of West Milford Township addresses the question of whether the road is genuinely haunted.

According to the police department, even officers who have served in the area for more than 30 years have never seen a ghost there.

Authorities have also warned that anyone who harasses local residents or creates dangerous situations on the road while searching for paranormal activity may face legal consequences.

The warning is important. Stopping suddenly on a winding, isolated road, standing in the middle of traffic to take photographs or trespassing on private property can create genuine dangers, particularly at night.

## Where does the mystery end?

Although no credible evidence has established the existence of ghosts on Clinton Road, public fascination with the location shows little sign of fading.

Every year, especially around Halloween, the road returns to conversations among paranormal enthusiasts, adventurers and curious travellers.

Psychologically, darkness, silence, unfamiliar surroundings and frightening stories heard in advance can intensify the human fear response. Ordinary headlights, shadows cast by trees or unfamiliar sounds from the forest can sometimes be interpreted as mysterious or supernatural experiences.

But even when a rational explanation is possible, does that necessarily make the fear disappear?

Clinton Road is not far from the busy urban landscape of New York City. Yet a relatively short journey away from traffic, illuminated buildings and crowded streets leads to a place where the silence of nature and the power of human imagination have combined to create a mystery that has endured for generations.

In daylight, Clinton Road may be little more than a scenic forest route. After dark, that same road transforms in the popular imagination into a world of fear, curiosity and suspense.

Whether Clinton Road is truly haunted remains unproven. But one thing is certain: ghosts or no ghosts, its stories are more than capable of sending a chill down anyone’s spine.
