UN Secretary-General Reaffirms Unwavering Support and Solidarity with Bangladesh

Deshi Tribune Diplomatic Desk:

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ unwavering support and solidarity with Bangladesh during a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman at UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday, coinciding with Bangladesh’s Independence Day.

The Secretary-General opened the meeting by extending warm congratulations to Bangladesh’s newly formed government, signalling a positive tone for the relationship between the two sides going forward. He also highly commended Bangladesh for its continued humanitarian leadership and extraordinary generosity in sheltering the forcibly
displaced Rohingya people, recognising the country’s long-standing role as one of the world’s most significant hosts of refugees under deeply challenging circumstances.

The two leaders also engaged in wide-ranging discussions on pressing global issues. Foreign Minister Dr. Rahman drew particular attention to the severe challenges facing developing and vulnerable nations as a result of the ongoing global oil crisis, emphasising that the burden of rising energy costs is falling disproportionately on poorer countries
that are least equipped to absorb the impact.

On behalf of the Prime Minister, Dr. Rahman formally extended an invitation to Secretary-General Guterres to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time. The Secretary-General welcomed the invitation warmly and expressed his appreciation, raising the prospect of a future visit that would further strengthen ties between Bangladesh and the United Nations.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Nations in confronting global challenges and advancing sustainable development for all nations.
