TikTok Founder Zhang Yiming Surpasses Adani to Become Asia’s Richest Person

A major reshuffle has taken place among Asia’s wealthiest individuals, with Chinese tech entrepreneur Zhang Yiming, founder of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, moving ahead of Indian industrialist Gautam Adani to become Asia’s richest person, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Zhang’s fortune has risen sharply amid the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and the growing valuation of ByteDance. Bloomberg’s wealth rankings put the 43-year-old entrepreneur’s net worth at more than $105 billion. His fortune was estimated at about $13 billion in March 2019, meaning it has increased more than eightfold in just over six years.

Bloomberg has also reported that Zhang became Asia’s second-richest person in May 2026 after surpassing Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani.

Who is Zhang Yiming?

Zhang founded ByteDance in 2012 from a four-bedroom apartment in Beijing. The company’s first major success was Toutiao, an algorithm-driven news and information platform that used machine learning to personalize content for individual users.

ByteDance later launched Douyin in China and TikTok internationally. The company’s recommendation technology, which predicts users’ interests based largely on their interactions rather than their social connections, became a key part of TikTok’s global success.

Zhang stepped down as ByteDance’s chief executive in 2021. However, he has retained significant influence over the company through his ownership and voting rights.

Before founding ByteDance, Zhang worked as an engineer at travel website Kuxun. He later spent a brief period at Microsoft before launching the real-estate search startup 99fang.com.

From Douyin to TikTok

ByteDance launched Douyin in China in 2016 and introduced TikTok to international markets the following year.

The company subsequently acquired the short-video platform Musical.ly and merged it with TikTok, helping accelerate TikTok’s global expansion. The platform eventually became one of the world’s most widely used short-video services.

ByteDance has since expanded beyond social media and video, with artificial intelligence becoming a major focus of its business strategy.

Big push into AI

ByteDance has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence, developing products including the Doubao AI chatbot as well as large language, video-generation and multimodal AI models.

Reuters reported that ByteDance planned more than 150 billion yuan ($20.6 billion) in capital expenditure in 2025, with a substantial portion earmarked for AI-related infrastructure. The company disputed reports about the scale of the planned spending, but its AI push has been evident through the development of multiple AI products.

Doubao has also emerged as a major AI application in China. Reuters reported that the chatbot had 159 million monthly active users in October 2025, making it the country’s leading AI app by that measure.

ByteDance has continued expanding its AI portfolio. In February 2026, Reuters reported that the company released new versions of Doubao and its Seedance and Seedream models as Chinese technology companies intensified competition in generative AI.

Regulatory pressure around TikTok

Zhang’s rise in wealth has occurred alongside years of regulatory pressure on ByteDance and TikTok, particularly in the United States.

Beginning in 2020, TikTok faced scrutiny over national security and data-privacy concerns. In 2024, the US passed legislation requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US operations or face restrictions, leading to a prolonged legal and political dispute.

Reuters reported that negotiations in 2025 eventually produced an agreement aimed at transferring control of TikTok’s US operations to American ownership, while the platform continued to face scrutiny over data security.

ByteDance has also faced increased regulatory oversight in China, where authorities have tightened rules governing internet platforms, competition and the use of algorithms.

Despite those challenges, Zhang’s fortune has continued to grow as ByteDance expands across social media, content recommendation and artificial intelligence.
