South Korea Seeks Greater Self-Reliance as Trust in U.S. Security Guarantee Wanes

Faced with North Korea’s nuclear threat and what it sees as Washington’s increasingly unpredictable policies, South Korea’s government is stepping up calls to strengthen the country’s own military capabilities.

The ruling Democratic Party has made it clear that Seoul can no longer afford to simply rely on the United States for its national security while taking a back seat in its own defense planning.

Speaking in parliament, ruling party leader Kim Min-seok said the United States could no longer be viewed as a benevolent “big brother,” arguing that Washington is increasingly pursuing tough negotiations based on its own interests. He said South Korea must begin building an independent defense system to protect its sovereignty and its people.

Growing Concerns Over Trump’s North Korea Policy

Seoul’s concerns have been fueled by several recent decisions by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump has said he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again. He has also ordered reductions in joint military exercises between U.S. and South Korean forces, citing their high cost and arguing that such drills unnecessarily provoke North Korea.

The biggest concern in Seoul is that Washington could eventually reach an agreement with Pyongyang that stops short of requiring North Korea to dismantle its existing nuclear arsenal, instead settling for a deal that merely limits or freezes the development of new weapons.

Against this backdrop, the Democratic Party believes South Korea must build a more independent defense capability so that any sudden agreement between Washington and Pyongyang does not leave the country’s security vulnerable.

At the same time, the party has called for avoiding unnecessary confrontation with North Korea and pursuing a path toward peaceful coexistence wherever possible.
