Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has expressed deep concern over reports of a possible large-scale US military strike against Iran, urging President Donald Trump to avoid further escalation during a telephone conversation on Saturday, according to US media reports.
Axios, citing a US official, reported that the crown prince sought details about the reported military plans and conveyed Saudi Arabia’s concerns over the potential consequences of such an operation.
A separate source familiar with the discussion said Mohammed bin Salman called on Trump to reduce tensions and refrain from launching an attack, warning that further escalation could destabilise the region.
According to the Associated Press, a person briefed on the conversation said Saudi Arabia fears that if the United States targets Iran’s energy infrastructure or key facilities such as bridges and power plants, Tehran could retaliate by striking energy installations across Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
The reported concerns reflect growing anxiety among Gulf countries that a broader confrontation between Washington and Tehran could threaten regional security and disrupt global energy supplies.
Earlier, Trump said he had decided against launching military action against Iran following requests from several Middle Eastern countries, indicating that diplomatic considerations had influenced the decision.
