Report Raises Questions Over Katie Zacharia’s Abrupt Exit From White House

A report has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Katie Zacharia’s departure as White House press secretary, alleging that a Fox News interview with host Sean Hannity may have been arranged in a way that intensified scrutiny of her professional credentials shortly before she left the job.

According to a report by British newspaper The Telegraph, Susie Wiles, President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, helped arrange Zacharia’s appearance on Hannity’s prime-time programme. The report suggested that Wiles did not favour Zacharia as a replacement for former press secretary Karoline Leavitt. These claims have not been independently established.

Zacharia faced pointed questions from Hannity about her legal qualifications during the interview on Thursday. When asked whether she had taken but failed the bar examination, she acknowledged that she had not passed.

The interview came amid mounting criticism of Zacharia’s public statements about her legal background and her performance during her first White House press briefing. She left the position on Friday, just five days after taking up the role.

Allegations over the interview

The Telegraph report, citing an unnamed source, claimed that Wiles and White House spokesperson Daniel Alvarez had helped put Zacharia in front of Hannity for the interview.

The source also pointed to a close relationship between Wiles and the Fox News host. However, a senior White House official disputed the suggestion that Wiles had orchestrated the interview to undermine Zacharia, saying such a move would not reflect her usual approach.

The official also argued that the interview was not the sole reason for Zacharia’s departure. Her difficult media appearances and inconsistent explanations about her legal credentials had contributed to the controversy, the official said.

A Fox News Media spokesperson said the decision about whom Hannity interviews, as well as the questions he asks, rests entirely with the host.

What Zacharia said about her legal background

During the interview, Zacharia said she graduated from Pepperdine University School of Law in 2011. She said she married that same week and was preparing to move to China with her husband, making the outcome of the California bar examination a low priority at the time.

She explained that she sat the examination because she had already registered and did not want her academic record to show that she had withdrawn.

Zacharia also said she subsequently worked in the international practice of a Chinese law firm, handling cross-border corporate transactions. She maintained that the work did not require membership in a US state bar association.

She distinguished between the terms “lawyer” and “attorney,” saying she had consulted Pepperdine University’s president after graduating. According to her account, she was advised that she could describe herself as a lawyer but not as an attorney.

When Hannity referred to social media posts that had identified her as an attorney, Zacharia suggested that the references had appeared in reposted material and said she believed she had later corrected them.

Her explanations did little to settle the questions surrounding her credentials, which had already attracted attention following her first press briefing.

A five-day tenure

Zacharia’s appointment was announced on October 9, and she took on the role previously held by Leavitt. Before joining the White House, she worked as a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group. Earlier in 2026, she served briefly as deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security.

Her tenure ended on October 16 after criticism of her initial briefing and questions about her professional background. Trump had publicly suggested that she reconsider the position, citing the intense media scrutiny she faced.

Although the circumstances surrounding the Hannity interview have prompted questions about internal White House dynamics, the available reporting does not establish that the appearance was deliberately arranged to force Zacharia out. Her departure followed several days of mounting controversy over both her performance and her description of her legal qualifications.
