Ramisa Murder Case: Preparations Complete for Death Reference Hearing

All preparations have been completed for the High Court hearing on the death reference and appeals in the Ramisa murder case, Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajal said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters in the morning, the Attorney General confirmed that the hearing in the Ramisa case will begin after the hearings in the Nusrat and Ayesha murder cases are concluded.

Earlier, a High Court bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja directed the Solicitor’s Office to arrange a state-appointed lawyer for the death-row convicts.

Following the order, Supreme Court lawyer Hafizur Rahman Khan was appointed on June 25 as the state defence counsel for convicted duo Sohel Rana and his wife, Swapna Akter.

According to the case details, Ramisa was raped and subsequently killed by Sohel Rana on May 19. His wife, Swapna Akter, was also found to have assisted him in the crime.

Considering the gravity of the offence, Judge Masrur Saleqeen of the Dhaka Children’s Crime Suppression Tribunal sentenced both accused to death.

After the verdict, the two convicts were transferred to condemned cells. They later filed jail appeals challenging the trial court’s judgment.

The upcoming death reference hearing before the High Court will determine whether the death sentences imposed by the trial court will be confirmed, altered or set aside.
