Peru Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Iran

Peru has announced that it is severing diplomatic relations with Iran, citing what it described as the deterioration of democracy in the country and alleged repression of peaceful protesters, political opponents and independent journalists.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Peru’s Foreign Ministry said the decision was consistent with the country’s longstanding commitment to peace, democracy and respect for international law.

Lima expressed particular concern over what it called the “deterioration of democracy” in Iran. Peru also accused Tehran of suppressing peaceful demonstrations, restricting independent journalism, discriminating against women and girls, and persecuting opposition political figures.

Concerns Over the Strait of Hormuz

Peru also raised concerns about disruptions to international trade through the Strait of Hormuz, saying prolonged instability in the strategically important waterway could push global energy prices higher.

Lima blamed Iran for contributing to the continuing instability in the Middle East, while the broader conflict has also involved military actions by the United States and Israel.

According to the report, the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February, during which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed. Tehran condemned the attacks as aggression and responded militarily.

Peru’s decision brings an end to its longstanding diplomatic relationship with Iran and marks a significant shift in Lima’s policy toward Tehran.
