Netanyahu Orders Removal of Illegal Israeli Outposts in the West Bank

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly ordered the rapid dismantling of unauthorized Israeli outposts in the occupied West Bank, following intense pressure from the United States, Reuters reported.

Violence and attacks by extremist Israeli settlers against Palestinians have escalated in recent months. Palestinian families have reportedly faced nighttime raids, forced displacement and attempts to seize their land.

In many cases, settlers have established small encampments using tents or temporary caravans and gradually turned them into permanent settlements. Growing international and domestic criticism has surrounded the issue.

Recently, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee met directly with a Palestinian-American family and described extremist settlers involved in violence as “terrorists.” Washington has also called for tougher action against those responsible.

Amid increasing pressure from the United States, Netanyahu has reportedly ordered action against the unauthorized outposts. According to Israeli news outlet Ynet, plans are underway to demolish around 100 illegal outposts scattered across the West Bank.

Hardline ministers within Netanyahu’s government had previously lobbied against the removal of such outposts. However, Netanyahu is now reportedly unwilling to make further concessions on the issue.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has strongly criticized the prime minister’s decision. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the government is currently being forced to remove unauthorized structures built in Areas A and B of the West Bank.

It remains unclear exactly when demolition operations will begin. However, the developments have coincided with a significant ruling by Israel’s Supreme Court.

On the same day, the court ordered that three Palestinian families from the village of Jalud be allowed to safely return to their homes and land after being forcibly displaced.

According to United Nations figures, alongside more than 100 officially recognized Israeli settlements in the West Bank, there are around 340 unauthorized outposts and encampments. International law considers Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory illegal, although Israeli authorities have historically allowed many unauthorized outposts to remain.

The latest developments indicate that growing pressure from Washington may be forcing the Netanyahu government to take action against at least some of these unauthorized settlements and outposts.
