Mamdani Announces New York City’s First Comprehensive Strategy to Combat Antisemitism

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced the city’s first comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting Jewish New Yorkers and combating antisemitism. The plan was released Tuesday, September 29, by the Mayor’s Office for the Prevention of Hate.

According to city officials, $6.4 million will be provided in grants to community organizations working to prevent hate crimes and support victims. Funding under the “Partnerships Against Hate” program is twice the amount allocated last year. An additional $1 million will be invested in strengthening security at places of worship, including synagogues.

The strategy also places a strong emphasis on education. The city plans to expand educational visits to the Museum of Jewish Heritage, giving more students opportunities to learn about Jewish history and the Holocaust. The plan also includes $2 million to complete a Holocaust memorial in Queens and $2.5 million for a new Jewish cultural center in Central Brooklyn.

To raise awareness about where and how to report discrimination, the city will launch a campaign across all five boroughs. Advertisements in public spaces, including LinkNYC kiosks, will explain how residents can file complaints under the city’s Human Rights Law. A multi-agency task force focused on the security of Jewish institutions will also be reactivated.

Mayor Mamdani said there is no place for antisemitism in New York City. His administration, he said, will work to ensure the safety of Jewish New Yorkers, educate the public about their history, and celebrate Jewish culture.

Phyllisa Wisdom, executive director of the Mayor’s Office for the Prevention of Hate, said that addressing antisemitism cannot be accomplished through a single program or agency. She emphasized the need for different city agencies to work together in a coordinated manner.

City officials said the strategy will be implemented through efforts to prevent hate-motivated violence, support victims, expand education, protect Jewish institutions, and maintain regular engagement with the Jewish community.
