Former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei has been appointed as the new secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. He was appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Alongside his new position, Rezaei will also serve as Khamenei’s representative on the council. As a result, he is set to play a central role in Iran’s key security and defense-related decision-making.
Rezaei replaces Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, who assumed the position after Ali Larijani was killed in US and Israeli strikes in March.
Mohsen Rezaei previously served as commander of the IRGC for many years. He is currently a member of Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council, which helps resolve disputes between the country’s parliament and the Guardian Council. The Guardian Council is responsible for reviewing legislation and vetting candidates for public office.
Rezaei also held a significant military leadership role during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
Meanwhile, as part of the leadership reshuffle, Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as his political adviser.
