Barcelona suffered a setback in the transfer market after failing to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. The Catalan club subsequently considered Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez as an alternative, but the Argentine forward ultimately decided to remain with the Italian side.
Barcelona’s Interest in Lautaro
After their efforts to land Alvarez proved unsuccessful, Barcelona reportedly identified Lautaro as a potential option to strengthen their attack.
At the time, Inter maintained that Barcelona had not submitted an official offer for the 29-year-old. The Serie A club also made it clear that it had no intention of opening negotiations over its captain.
Lautaro has now confirmed that Barcelona’s interest was genuine. Speaking to Sky Italia at the recent Gran Gala del Calcio in Italy, he acknowledged reports published by the Catalan newspaper Sport.
“Receiving interest from a club like that is always a source of pride. I work every day to remain at the highest level of football, so the reports that came out were true,” Lautaro said.
Why Lautaro Chose to Stay at Inter
Despite Barcelona’s interest, Lautaro made it clear that leaving Inter was never his priority.
“I have always said that I want to stay at Inter. I want to be here with my teammates and our supporters. As long as the club wants me, I will stay here,” the Argentina international said.
Lautaro is currently under contract with Inter until 2029 and remains a central figure in the club’s plans.
Committed to Inter’s Future
The forward also acknowledged that football can change quickly and that players may eventually find themselves unwanted at a club. However, he stressed that he remains happy in Milan and wants to continue competing for major trophies with Inter.
“Football sometimes reaches a point where you are no longer considered necessary. But playing for Inter is a great source of pride for me. I am happy here, I want to stay and I want to keep improving every day while fighting for important trophies with this club,” he said.
Meanwhile, after missing out on Alvarez, Barcelona have reportedly turned to Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus to reinforce their attack for the new season.
