Kevin needed no more immigration laws

Just one day after reuniting with his parents, 18-year-old Kevin Gonzalez — who was battling terminal cancer — passed away in his family’s arms in Durango. His final wish had been simple: to see his mother and father one last time.

Born in Chicago, Kevin sought medical treatment earlier this year after suffering severe stomach problems. Doctors diagnosed him with Colon Cancer, which had already spread to his abdomen and lungs. They told the family there were no remaining treatment options and advised that he spend his final days at home with loved ones.

Kevin’s parents had been deported to Mexico years earlier under U.S. immigration laws. When they learned of their son’s condition, they tried to return to the United States to be with him — but were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and held at a detention center in Arizona.

Meanwhile, Kevin returned to Mexico and waited with his grandmother, hoping his parents would somehow make it back in time.

Last week, Kevin made a public plea asking authorities to release his parents. With support from the Mexican Consulate and several lawmakers, the case reached court. During Thursday’s hearing, the father’s appeal reportedly moved the courtroom emotionally, and by Friday, a judge ordered the parents’ release.

On May 9, Kevin ran into his mother’s arms in Durango — a long-awaited moment of joy after months of pain and separation.

But that reunion was heartbreakingly brief.

On Sunday afternoon, surrounded by his parents and relatives, Kevin took his final breath.

Fighting back tears, Kevin’s mother said, “I never imagined I would see him so thin.”

His father, overwhelmed with grief, said, “I knelt at his feet and told him: if I ever hurt you as a father, please forgive me. I love you.”

He added, “To see my son one last time, I would have climbed walls, crossed barbed wire — I would have given my life.”

Kevin’s story has touched countless hearts. In the end, his final wish came true — he left this world with his parents by his side.
