U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Iran has run out of money and is struggling economically, making it clear that Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is not acceptable.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House before departing for Tennessee, Trump said Tehran was now in serious trouble. He blamed Iran for its own predicament, arguing that the country had trapped itself by attempting to close the strategic waterway.
Trump also said that such a severe blockade—or “steel wall,” as he described it—had never been seen before in military history. Since Iran had blocked the route, he said, the country was now facing severe financial difficulties.
Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding the strategically important waterway, the U.S. administration has maintained a firm position on keeping international energy supplies flowing normally.
Trump said that large quantities of crude oil and other energy products pass through the Strait of Hormuz every day. He added that 29 vessels had safely passed through the waterway just the previous night.
