Chapman Turns Down Full New Zealand Contract to Play in BBL

New Zealand all-rounder Mark Chapman has become the latest Kiwi cricketer to step away from a full-time central contract in order to pursue opportunities in franchise cricket.

Chapman has declined a full central contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) as he plans to play in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). However, because he remains committed to representing New Zealand in international cricket, NZC has retained him on a part-time contract.

Under the new arrangement, Chapman will not be required to regularly play domestic cricket in New Zealand. This will give him greater flexibility to participate in other franchise-based T20 leagues around the world.

BBL Plans Behind the Decision

Chapman’s decision is primarily linked to the upcoming BBL season, which begins in December. Because the tournament overlaps with New Zealand’s domestic season, remaining on a full-time central contract would have made it difficult for him to take part in the BBL.

The part-time contract removes that restriction and allows Chapman to pursue franchise opportunities while remaining available for New Zealand.

He joins Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert, who have previously opted for similar arrangements to gain greater freedom to play franchise cricket.

Still Committed to New Zealand

Chapman’s decision does not signal any change in his commitment to the national team. He is expected to feature for New Zealand in their white-ball series against India in November and has expressed his excitement about the upcoming assignment.

The all-rounder also thanked New Zealand Cricket for its support and for allowing him to balance international commitments with opportunities in franchise cricket.

Matt Fisher Gets Full Central Contract

Chapman’s departure from the full central-contract list created a vacancy, which NZC has filled by handing fast bowler Matt Fisher a full-time central contract.

New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen welcomed the decision to bring Fisher into the contracted group, highlighting the demanding Test series ahead against India, Australia and Sri Lanka.

According to Larsen, Fisher’s pace and ability could add valuable depth to New Zealand’s bowling attack and help maintain the team’s balance during a challenging run of Test cricket.
