Popular US TikTok star and social media influencer Sydney Taul has died at the age of 26 after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer for nearly three years. She died from complications after cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile ducts, spread to other parts of her body.
According to the BBC, Sydney’s brother, Austin Taul, confirmed her death in a video shared on social media last Thursday, alongside their mother. He said Sydney passed away peacefully the previous night after fighting cancer for almost three years. She had been moved to hospice care several days before her death.
Sydney, who lived in New York City, had more than one million followers on TikTok and over 200,000 followers on Instagram. Throughout her long battle with cancer, she openly shared her journey with her followers. She documented everything from chemotherapy and hospital stays to physical pain, emotional struggles, moments of hope and despair, and the small joys of everyday life.
In a statement, Sydney’s family said she had always worked to raise awareness about rare cancers and encourage patients to take an active role in discussions about their treatment. Her family said they hoped to carry forward her commitment to raising awareness and her outlook on life.
News of Sydney’s death prompted an outpouring of grief on social media. Thousands of followers remembered her courage, positivity and love for life. Actress Alyssa Milano was also among those who paid tribute to her.
In May this year, Sydney shared several videos from the hospital in which she revealed that the cancer had spread to her peritoneum. In a video posted on May 19, she said her oncologist could no longer continue her treatment and had advised her to prepare for the final stage of her life.
Sydney, however, chose not to accept that advice. She sought out another specialist and decided to continue pursuing treatment.
Despite her battle with a life-threatening illness, Sydney continued to celebrate life. She regularly shared videos and photos of herself dancing, spending time with friends, dressing up and enjoying everyday moments with her followers.
She also recently fulfilled one of her longtime dreams. Sydney walked the runway in a swimsuit at the Miami Swim Week fashion show organized by The Chemio Club x Post Swim.
She never shied away from the scars left by her surgeries. Instead, she viewed them as symbols of her strength and the battle she had fought.
One of her messages that went viral on social media read: “Buy your favorite ice cream. Watch your favorite movie. Life is good and bad. Just because something bad happens doesn’t mean life is bad.”
“I’ve learned to see the strength and beauty of this body in a whole new way,” Sydney once said.
Another message from her left a lasting impression on her followers: “Dreams only end when you let them end.”
Sydney may have lost her physical battle with cancer at just 26, but her courage, resilience and love for life touched millions of people. The message she left behind continues to inspire others to embrace life and hold on to hope, even in the face of adversity.
