Bangladesh Urges Global Unity for Complete Nuclear Disarmament at UN

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK — Bangladesh has issued a strong appeal to the international community to renew its commitments to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, calling for coordinated and effective measures to build a world entirely free of nuclear weapons.

The call was made during the general debate of the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, articulated Dhaka’s firm stance at the summit.

Addressing the conference, Ambassador Chowdhury observed that more than eight decades after the founding of the United Nations, the vision of a nuclear-weapon-free world remains largely elusive.

“The continued proliferation of nuclear weapons is not only a severe threat to international peace and security, but it also obstructs the trajectory of global development,” he warned.

Highlighting Dhaka’s unwavering position on the issue, the ambassador emphasized that Bangladesh has long been a vocal advocate for the total eradication of all weapons of mass destruction. He pointed out that despite being geographically situated in a heavily nuclear-armed region, Bangladesh has voluntarily and strictly adhered to a policy of remaining a non-nuclear weapons state.

Invoking Article 6 of the NPT, Chowdhury urged nuclear-armed nations to honor their legal and moral obligations regarding disarmament. He also underscored the critical need for the universalization of all international disarmament treaties.

Reaffirming Dhaka’s dedication to collaborating with the global community to secure a safer planet for future generations, the envoy concluded: “Only constructive dialogue, mutual trust, and coordinated initiatives can gift us a world free from the menacing clutches of nuclear weapons.”
